Vitamin E An important antioxidant for the whole body.

My fascination with understanding vitamin E began with episodes of wry neck in my hen, Bartok.

I wanted to understand why a deficiency in this vitamin causes these symptoms, so I set out to investigate: What is vitamin E?

What is vitamin E and what does it do?

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that primarily works by neutralizing unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals can damage the body’s cells and contribute to various diseases. During normal metabolic processes, energy is produced, which also generates unstable oxygen molecules that are missing an electron. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant by stabilizing these molecules through electron donation, thereby helping to prevent cellular damage.

Balance is essential. Some free radicals are beneficial, but too many can be harmful.

Another important function of vitamin E is supporting the immune system. This means that a vitamin E deficiency can make birds more susceptible to disease.

What Does Vitamin E Do for Chickens?

Adequate levels of vitamin E can help chickens better tolerate heat stress and support their immune system, including their defense against bacteria such as E. coli. It may also contribute to higher hatchability, improved egg production, and increased fertility.

What Are the Symptoms of Vitamin E Deficiency in Chickens?

Vitamin E is essential for chickens, and a deficiency can have widespread effects. The list of symptoms is long, but some of the most important signs include:

  • Wry neck

  • Muscle dysfunction

  • Paralysis

  • “Crazy chick disease” (encephalomalacia)

  • Bleeding

  • Reduced egg production

But how can you prevent a deficiency?

As I mentioned earlier, balance is key. A high-quality, well-balanced staple diet is essential for daily nutrition, but keep in mind that many commercial feeds may not provide sufficient levels of vitamins for your chickens. Supplementing their diet with a multivitamin supplement can therefore be highly beneficial.

And don’t forget to include good-quality fruits, vegetables, and nuts!
